For the Love of Geode

Geodes, deriving its name from the Greek word which means "earthlike", have long been valued as objects of curiosities and prized for its beauty.

Discovered as almost rounded formations found in volcanic and sedimentary rocks, geodes often contain tiny sparkling crystals in their cavities (like spilled salt or sugar), sometimes banding with agate, chalcedony or jasper.  This blanket of tiny crystals occur through a process taking perhaps a few hundred or even a few thousand years to form and is more commonly known as "druzy".

The Geode stone is precious such that each is unique in size, form and color while capturing the characteristics of its locale.  Of course, I could not resist acquiring some pieces of my own.  You will find this one in the shop:

And here is what I made as a birthday present for a friend - an amethyst druzy pendant (that I have been hoarding for a while) edged and backed with 18K gold gliding along an oxidized sterling silver chain with ruby and pyrite accents.

How to Choose the Perfect Earrings

Wearing the right earrings can do so much to show off your best features and bring out your personality.  While the occasion often dictates the style of jewelry you choose, there are other equally important factors to consider too.  Today's post shares two key tips with you.

What is the shape of your face?

Oval shape ladies are in luck as almost any style of earrings will fit you well.

If your face is round, avoid repeating the same shape in your earrings, such as large round hoops or button earrings.  Choose earrings that elongate your face, like a long dangle earring.

(Picture credits: I can't remember the names of these two ladies... can anyone help me?)

Ladies with a long, thin face would avoid long dangles and wear short, wide earrings, such as studs or chandelier earrings.  Round, triangular or square earrings would work nicely to wide the shape of your face.

Long and/or round earrings flatter square shape faces.  Oval (or any curve-shape) and hoops earrings help soften the shape of the face while long tear drop and multi-tiered dangling earrings add length.

If you are unsure about your face shape, hop over to The Beauty Department.  They have a awesome pictorial decision tree that would help you figure it out.

What is the color of your skin and hair?

While there are no hard and fast rules here, ladies of warm skin tones (usually tan, olive or dark-skinned) better tend to look better in gold earrings, than pale, cool skin tones.  The latter usually look gorgeous in silver earrings.

If you have dark, black hair, silver earrings would be fabulous on you.  Blondes, on the other hand, tend to shine in polished or brushed gold.  And copper goes naturally with red-heads.

I heart :: Aqua

To celebrate the beginning of a new year, I thought I would share one of my favorite things (or colors).  Aqua, in Latin it means water and may also refer to a color between green and blue.  The Aqua color is cool, calms the mind and feels almost ethereal.

Just to get you started...
